The Effect Initially, BOTOX® or Botulinum toxins have been utilized to treat neck spasms, eye spasms and cranial nerve disorders. With the approval of the FDA, BOTOX® is now widely used for cosmetic purposes in the glabellar region (a smooth prominence on the frontal bone above the root of the nose) to smoothen and even out wrinkles. Through BOTOX®, expression lines such as forehead lines and frown lines are softened and most of the time erased with treatment. As the BOTOX® is injected into the facial muscles; it blocks the nerve impulses that cause temporary paralysis of the muscles, hence smoothing out wrinkles. At present, BOTOX ® is the only type of botulinum toxin that is approved by the FDA to be used for cosmetic purposes in the area of the glabella region.
